"When the earth is shaken with a (violent) shaking, And the earth reveals what burdens her, And man says: What has befallen her? On that day she shall tell her story...." (Qur'an 99:1-4)

Allah (SWT) has given the earth as a trust to mankind.  Allah (SWT) says “We did indeed offer the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains; but they refused to undertake it, being afraid thereof. But man undertook it (the trust)...” (33-72)

Accepting this trust comes with huge responsibilities.  Can we as Muslims declare that we are fulfilling this trust?  As can be seen and felt on a daily basis, the earth’s resources are quickly being deteriorated and tarnished.  Our air, lakes, seas, including our groundwater are polluted, our natural resources are being over utilized, the ozone layer is being depleted, forests are being ravaged, and we are in the midst of facing the most devastating problem which we ourselves have created, global warming.

The word “Earth” appears in the Quran over 450 times, a clear indication of the importance it has been given.  Since we are God’s vicegerents on earth, we cannot dispose of it as we wish or as we are able.  Nature was created by God and it belongs to God.  Everything in nature is a sign of God’s existence.  Our duty is to show respect for the trust, and to preserve it carefully, in no way wasting its natural resources.

We will all return to God and will be held to account for our actions. This means that we are answerable for all that we do, both the good, and the evil. As God’s vicegerent on earth, we will be called to account for how we acted towards the trust, and how we treated it.

Prophet Mohammad (SAW) has also said that “God is beautiful and He loves the beautiful; He is generous and loves generosity; He is clean and loves cleanliness.”

Therefore, instead of using the earth as our trash can, each one of us is responsible for conserving and protecting it. We should not sit idly by while the earth is being spoiled.  We should keep it clean and safe from harm as we do our own homes and our own selves.  This is the least we can do as Allah says “O you people! Worship your Sustainer.... Who has made the earth your couch and the heavens your canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith fruits for your sustenance; then set not up rivals unto God when you know [the truth].” 2:21-2

In order to maintain this trust, which is completely neglected by most of us, MY DEEN will implement the following programs in the upcoming years: clean-up events, water conservation projects, air pollution control promotion, and other resource management programs.
